I too have purchased HCR’s book and have started reading it, albeit with a five day hiatus on it and SubStack reads to be with relatives and friends in a peaceful place of nature over Thanksgiving. What troubles me is the difficulty with which I went searching for the book less than one week of its published public availability in a brick-and-mortar nationwide book store (that for the sake of protecting the guilty has a name that starts with the same letter as brick). My wife had recently told me the local location of said store appeared to be a right-wing reading room based on observed stacks and displays of all things conservative and Christian. This in a fairly left-of-center town but bordering on a deep red zone of Southern California. I went in search of her theory and thought why not buy HCR’s new book while I’m there. She was spot on. I couldn’t find it anywhere and just as I was about to stand in line to ask the counter person, I make a third pass through the store to find a single four book high stack of Democracy Awakening completely surrounded and hidden by huge stacks of the latest biography on Elon Musk. I’ll go back to buying books online.
I’m sad to hear your tale. We have an independent bookseller in a nearby town, but she recently closed one of her shops. I must confess that I end up buying on line also, in particular at used book outlets. But sometimes I order new ones too as was the case for HCR’s. I used to love browsing the book sections of Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores, but going there has become problematic in terms of my hoarding. So I stay home and read what I have.
Book hoarding? You’re communicating with the guy who binge buys 19 books online once a year. I made an exception for Democracy Awakening, bought at a store and let it butt in line in front of other books. Bookshop.org online is a great bookseller. Books ship from locally owned small bookstores and profits are returned to those bookstores. The website also tells you which local bookstores participate in the program in case you want to visit a physical bookstore. I try to avoid Amazon as much as possible.
I have the book and started reading it. It’s such an important book Still, I have to remind myself to set aside time just for that book. It’s beautifully written and easy to read.
I hope people have bought several copies to distribute to friends and family after dinner.
Katherine, have a very enjoyable Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful time to get together with friends and family and just eat way too much food and relax. I will refuse to discuss politics today and will, instead, just enjoy the moment.
The only way I sleep at night is knowing there are amazing people who are aware of what is occuring and are working hard to defend our way of life. When I felt like I was alone in 2015-2016, it was much harder. I just hope they can awaken the "unlikely" voters in time. Have a wonderful day.
Now I’m lost again. But at least I’m replying directly to you. I think there’s only one of me, but I never titled it anything other than Katharine’s Substack (the generic default). But each post has its own title, and I am committed to posting on Thursday and Sunday. Comments on other Stacks whenever I am so moved.

Hope my reply got into the right thread. I was multitasking which is always a mistake.
So I see I didn’t. Check out original for my thoughts if you’re interested.

By the way, I thought of at least three bookstore chains which begin with “B” so . . . will try to avoid all.

Two Substack newsletters same theme. Both with a Katharine. I too might be confused
