Where To Begin?

I’m dedicated to posting on Sunday, but honestly the title says it all. Every time a new horror hits the headlines, I think I’ll have to write about that. But then by the time I sit down on my regularly scheduled days, everything is old news. And Substack has exploded with so much talent lately, including many real journalists and other creatives, that I feel a bit like amateur night at the Apollo. And to add to the confusion, I spend a lot of time reading here all week and commenting so much that I lose track of where I said what. So let me keep this rather personal as I mention what I’m thinking about this morning.

First, as I continue reading On Call, I marked page 101 where Dr. Fauci talks about his relationship with the many AIDS activist groups and he references a documentary directed by David France called How to Survive a Plague which seems particularly fitting once again. I looked it up just now and it is available from many sources.

Then Carole Cadwalladr’s Subtack post led me to watch Baroness Kidron in the House of Lords speaking eloquently in favor of amendments to Britain’s laws regarding AI and its use of creative works as training material. It is an extremely complicated issue concerning copyright laws, and I was pleased to learn that Beeban Kidron is a children’s rights campaigner for online safety. A quote I found from her seems particularly apropos this morning: “Taking apart legal protections is straight out of a dictator’s playbook.” The latest person to be fired here in the dumpster fire administration of the U.S. is the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Board.

And now I have to wrap up because I haven’t even read my actual Sunday paper yet, and also my Afib heart decided to nudge me to chill. I had better enjoy a “real” newspaper as long as I can. ONE DAY AT A TIME!
