Continuing a theme I addressed last Sunday, this is the film which actually belongs with the ones I cited later in my post. A gorgeous film of love of all kinds starring the crush-worthy Hardy Kruger from 1961, with the other three movies from the late 50’s to early 60’s. The original post I made about Sunday, Bloody Sunday describes a later film from 1971. So all of this got me thinking about the fallibility of memory. We moved a lot when I was growing up (13 different grade schools as I recall before Mum put her foot down and said these girls are going to finish high school in one place) but my point is that I must have seen the later film here in the States. I do remember specifically graduating from high school in 1964 while I was still 16. So perhaps all of my filmgoing was in New Jersey after all? I definitely still felt English though and would have been drawn to those British films. Perhaps my sister can help recreate our time together. We have started discussing some of our childhood memories, but with almost three years between us we didn’t usually have the same friends nor socialize together much.
And on the subject of memory, I do recall quite specifically the day in 1967 when the 6-day war started because I was in the office of a professor at the college I was attending at night and he was very visibly upset. I’ve always had in my mind that he was on the Arab rather than Israeli side, but I could be mistaken. I didn’t discuss the matter directly with him because I knew very little about the subject. Unfortunately, my knowledge base in that area has not improved much over the years, but the current situation in that part of the world certainly calls to mind the trite expression, deja vu all over again.
Writing by hand is still the most authentic and helps to center oneself when nothing else will. My son at 26 says he just started keeping a journal and it's important to help reduce anxiety.
You know you can embed the trailers of these movies from YouTube and provide links to them? Makes for a nice visual to go with your post.
