Today’s Stack is dedicated to my BFF, Carol, because she actually has been reading my posts. And yesterday there arrived in the mail the third book by Jonathan Karl entitled Tired of Winning about which I have written previously. Carol had ordered it for me although “we don’t exchange presents.” I wasn’t feeling great yesterday, so what a treat to stay in bed and read this NYTimes bestselling author. I’ve already learned a lot I didn’t know about before, including a YouTube video of the J6 chorus of convicted felons with overlay of impeached president. Probably something I shouldn’t have burned into my brain, but knowledge is power.
And about the Sunday drive I took today because I felt so much better than yesterday: First I took myself out for blueberry pancakes at my favorite local diner (the serving they provide lasts me for three weeks of special Sunday breakfasts so I take my own to-go box in preparation). Then I set off for a ride to turn in all the bottles and cans I have been collecting lately. It usually turns out to be a wash because I drive so far to see my favorite bottle guy that the money I earn is spent on gas. But think of the enjoyment I get from it. There is also a Starbucks nearby the bottle return so after all the hard work of feeding the machines, I was ready for another coffee. And the next shiny thing called out to me because the fabulous cups were 50 percent off. Now Carol will tell you that I need another coffee cup like a hole in the head, but treating myself seemed like the right thing to do. And by the way, the young woman at the cash register was wearing a tiny round button which said she/her. Good to know. And that reminds me of a site we should all pay attention to called TurnUp. Check it out and hear the young people talk about how they plan to save democracy. One of them tells us that they don’t use Facebook—also good to know. Finally, I took the long way home from there and stopped at another favorite place—a country market with an actual butcher. I needed chicken breasts after all.
The main point of this story, however, is to tell you that I still have my CLINTON/KAINE sticker on the back of my car, and I have to admit that sometimes I get a little anxious when a pick-up truck is tailing me on a deserted road. They usually roar by as soon as they can pass or even before it’s really safe. But I sigh with relief when I have the road to myself again. And the other point of the story is that with my eyes not as they used to be, I want to enjoy the driving as long as I can. Cloudy days are necessary, and I have to rely on my right eye to do the work. The left one if used alone removes half of the oncoming traffic. As I type this story, I think I’ve told you all this before. I will go back and read my own posts just in case.
So I don’t seem to be repeating my own posts, but it may be that I have talked about some of this stuff when I comment on all the other wonderful writers I enjoy here on Substack. And speaking of which, Happy Birthday to E. Jean Carroll. She is keeping up with technology and life in general at 80 and is definitely an inspiration to women worldwide. Peace and Love to all of us, and particularly to my friend Carol who called me while I was out driving to remind me that I hadn’t posted yet!
Enjoy the rest of the pancakes.
