I awoke this morning and went straight out for my morning walkies and collected a whole bunch of cans and bottles to return for 10 cents each. I had watched the political drama until I wound down with some telly and went to bed at my usual early time. After awaking and walking, I finally turned on my electronics and was saddened to see that yesterday’s House session was still ongoing.
I had spent all of Wednesday watching the back and forth in the House. I learned some new terms as well. First there was the vote-a-rama which managed to delay proceedings quite a bit. Then there was the conga line, where hundreds of Democrats asked the same point of order and got shot down by the Republican chair. Fascinating to see our elected representatives performing their work in real time.
Now I am listening to Hakeem Jeffries in another of his marathon speeches as the Wednesday session continues its Part 2. As a senior on Social Security and Medicare, I know that this big ugly bill is decimating much of the safety net. So I don’t want to miss too much of this history-making speech.
I will end my post this morning by saying that many years ago I drove the Tamiami Trail and saw the state of that countryside. And now I see online the hastily erected concentration camp that has arisen in the swamp. What on earth is happening here? Is history repeating?
With some of my senses diminishing, I was glad this morning that I was able to smell the honeysuckle. And my quote-a-day calendar gives me this uplift from French writer Andre Gide: “Happiness, how intimate a part of the soul it is, and of what little importance are the outside elements which seem to go to its making?”

Love the smell of honeysuckle and tea olive. I was able to better understand that we face a cult, and therefore rational thinking is not to be expected. Now the cult members are too ashamed to admit they have screwed up. There is a way for us to rescue some. So says Jayne Converse. I just found her, number 2 behind you! https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/mired-republican-cult?r=3m1bs
Yes these are troubled times. Yet, borrowing from Buddhist and Stoic philosophies I’m choosing to not suffer. My suffering will not change anything except me for the worst.
