These Thursday’s seem to be arriving much faster than ever before. But I am committed to posting today, so here goes. I am going to avoid what everyone is talking about because quite frankly there’s only so much outrage my old body can stand. I’ve commented through the week on all the shit that has gone down, so now I am going to change the subject, although my first topic is current events adjacent.
I am confessing today to learning new things every day, which I consider a good thing. But I am always amazed when completely new words come to my notice. I had never heard of the term “Gish gallop” until it became applied to a certain recent debate. Looking up the meaning and derivation, I find that it was coined in 1994, which may explain why it hadn’t reached me since I had long been out of formal schooling by then. Now that I understand it, I realize how apt a characterization of the former President’s behavior it is.
The next completely new to me word comes from my puzzle a day calendar. It involved the term Fibonacci Sequence so of course I had to look it up (after I managed to do the puzzle to my amazement). It is a mathematical term in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. I have never been particularly interested in (nor very good at) any type of math, so forgive me
if I gravitate to word puzzles instead. But that leads me to my final thoughts for today.
As I shared before, I got the Brittney Griner book “Coming Home” for my birthday, and I am fascinated by the story of her ordeal in Russia (very apropos for today’s headlines about the final release of Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and others). Brittney was thankful that one of the few things that ended up staying with her was her book of Sudoku puzzles. She noted that she had always loved math and been good at puzzles. Now I understand why I haven’t taken to that craze which swept the country a few years ago. If I were ever in such a situation, I would hope for a crossword puzzle book to accompany me. To each her own.
Finally, thank you to the person who posted pictures of Bert and Ernie with their cats. I have very fond memories of watching Sesame Street with my daughter as I reminisce of a time when life seemed simpler. So glad my darling grandson will be able to learn from the Muppets still. There is hope in the world! TTFN
Thanks, Michael G. I’m glad you mentioned the gene aspect because my darling architect daughter inherited that one from her father. It’s fascinating to recognize how we humans differ in many ways, while also having lots in common. And I love the quote whichever historical genius said it.
I think “Gish gallop” was a new one for all of us. Fibonacci Sequence I know having been born with the math gene and a career in the fields of architecture and engineering where it occasionally pops up.
Learn one new thing every day.
