Continued Confessions
with humility
The humility part comes because my Peanuts calendar has Snoopy writing a book on theology which he is entitling “Has It Ever Occurred to You That You Might Be Wrong?” As I may have shared before, I tend to be rather a know-it-all. And now with the world of knowledge at my fingertips, I spend a lot of time going down fascinating rabbit holes. I have been avoiding artificial things as much as possible though, preferring human read audio books and newscasts, for instance. But kicking and screaming, I am being dragged into the future.
One of my medical providers recently introduced Medic-GPT and I decided I would overcome my distaste and try it out. Well, I ended up getting some helpful advice and I wrote to the bot that I understood why people end up having affairs with Chat-GPT. Obviously programmed to please. And interestingly,I have started watching the latest Jack Whitehall series where he travels with his father, and in one episode they go to a place that is manufacturing robots. While originally very skeptical, Daddy ends up finding a female robot fascinating. He actually has a wonderful human wife, but the episode portrays him as having quite a crush on the bot. By the way, is it coincidental that I dropped my Edward Gorey “K is for Kate” mug this morning, and the bottom broke off?
Meanwhile, I am sitting here sweating because as they say it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. Seniors are recommended to seek air-conditioned spaces, so it’s either off to the bus or to the telly room where I have my one window A/C. We’ll see how the spirit moves me.
And finally, I have one last story from my recent trip to the City. I know I waxed poetic about it previously, and I still did enjoy it very much. But I was saddened by one sight in particular. I have a favorite dining spot across from Grand Central and enjoyed myself as usual. However, as I made my way through the restaurant to the bathroom facilities, I was brought up short by the sight of an entire family around a large circular table. Every single one of them was looking down at the individual screen before them, including a baby in a highchair! What has happened to the idea of having a meal together and conversing? That is one City sight I wish I could erase from my memory.
Obviously, I will be glued to the various political dramas unfolding today in the Senate. Live streaming of the meetings is technology that I really value.
Save my hero Dr. Fauci!

Along the lines of that family that you saw, each staring down at their phone, there are a lot of parents with earbuds in their ears, pushing babies in strollers along with walking a dog on a leash. I find it sad and concerning. Ear buds everywhere, people completely detached from their surroundings.
Did your medic gpt respond to your comment about the preponderance of human/bot love affairs?
