I feel a certain familiarity with mortgages, having been a title searcher for many decades. However, I had to look up what would constitute “mortgage fraud” because of its recent popularity. And in watching some experts in law discuss the recent turn of events, I learned a new word “intentionality” which seems to apply.
Over my life I have bought and sold property under varying circumstances and in two different states. I have done transactions when I was single and while I was married to various husbands. And at one period, I had property in two states, and my husband and I lived separately during the week but came together on weekends. So I began searching this morning for the meaning of the other germane word “domicile” and find that it can differ from state to state. I also looked up “snow birds” because we have a lot of people here in the Northeast who flee to the warmth of Florida during the winter. I believe a lot of them then claim domicile in that state instead of here to avoid the higher taxes. But how many days a year does it require for a person to become domiciled elsewhere? And what if they then want to re-finance their original lodging in the northern state to help finance their traveling lifestyle? Talk about complicated.
All of this is to let you know that I have no clear answers to any of it. I’ve finished Robert Reich’s book Coming Up Short, which I highly recommend by the way. But that title is apt for my feelings about what I can contribute to the horrible political nature of the use of mortgage fraud to go after Lisa Cook, Adam Schiff, et al. Just think about the fact that many politicians have domiciles in the states that they represent. However, they need somewhere to live in D.C. as they serve their country. Again, you decide whether a person can have two “principal” residences. Talk about a tempest in a teapot. I am sure that a plethora of real estate professionals along with mortgage brokers, financiers, and credit default swap experts could spend the rest of my life snarling at each other about page 1,907 of the latest mortgage application of another as-yet-to-be-named public official. Heaven help us if this is what technology has wrought. A book from my pile just resurfaced—David Brooks’ 2015 The Road to Character—but now I’m not sure I want to finish reading it. I’ve been seeing other discouraging news about him these days. I’ll let you know what I decide.
Meanwhile, I am setting off in a minute to walk to our local hospital which now has a pharmacy. My independent pharmacist kindly referred me there because of the organization’s ability to get bulk prices. And now I am in the catastrophic part of my heath coverage, so my drugs are totally covered. That’s the kind of catastrophe I can enjoy!
