I’m later than usual today because this whole week I have been having laptop issues which resulted in my work being more difficult to deliver than usual. And earlier the annoying machine wouldn’t let me sign on at all. I’d try a few times, then it would tell me to wait 15 minutes. So I did, and it still wouldn’t accept my password. So I shut it off and sat back in my chair. And actually I was very glad I did because I was able to catch the latest It’s Complicated with Asha Rangappa and Renato Mariotti on my phone. They provide a stellar explanation of the law for those of us with an interest in the nuts and bolts of the legal profession and in particular how it relates these days so strongly to the political scene. I really enjoy listening to them as I work once again on my needlepoint (the one I started in high school). The weather is so nice I would have been out on my back deck for the afternoon; however, other neighbors have taken the break in the heat to catch up on all kinds of yard work so the sound of a chainsaw spoiled my quiet time. I retreated back inside and would have posted then, but to everything there is a season . . .
Meanwhile, the mail came early and I was thrilled to find a package with two books that I had pre-ordered. The first is The Joy of Connections by Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer (who sadly left us in July of this year). The subtitle is “10 Ways to Beat Loneliness and Live a Happier and More Meaningful Life” and the book is co-written by Allison Gilbert and Pierre Lehu. I can’t wait to devour this slim volume which will be great for my bedtime read. The other book is a bit weightier, both in actuality even though it is a paperback and in subject. Professor of Law Kim Wehle has given us Pardon Power: How The Pardon System Works — And Why. The book has a foreword by John W. Dean (yes, the one from Watergate) so it will be fascinating. It will have to wait until I have finished my Central American lessons from Jonathan Blitzer though.
The other delight in the mail was The New Yorker, so now I am going to have my tea and catch up with my weekly compilation of the latest developments in our convoluted world. Who knows what will have happened by the time I post on Sunday?
