Continued Confessions
but at a loss for words
Having lived through the Bicentennial celebrated on July 4, 1976, I honestly cannot remember whether a great deal of fuss was made over it. I had just graduated from college and was determined to get pregnant so my thoughts were elsewhere. I suspect if I researched it, I would find all kinds of fabulous events celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It certainly was considered a joyous occasion (and I just took a quick peek and Operation Sail was one event I remembered).
But now that we are approaching the Semiquincentennial I am somewhat subdued by the people organizing the celebration. Please do everything you can to remind our elected officials that they serve We the People, not a demi-god who wants his birthday given all the attention.
And now because I said I was short of words, I am going to rely on two quotes from my Page-a-Day calendar. I hope you find them useful.
Today the quote is from James Baldwin, American writer and social critic, who says “The place in which I’ll fit will not exist until I make it.”
And yesterday’s quote was from a current hero of mine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President: “All of our tomorrows, and the tomorrows of our children and grandchildren, depend on each of our todays.”

If I can arrange it and time it, I will non-celebrate by being out of the country. I have no desire to give one nanometer of a sign favoring any display, activity, action, or event in any way connected to the tRump Administration, especially since I have no doubt they will turn the whole affair into the universe’s biggest tRump fest.
