Who knew that my musings here might ever include matters of national security interest? Honestly, when I began writing ever so long ago, Substack was being debated online for some reason or another (and I remember standing up for the app) and now it seems to be the outlet of choice for people far more important than I am.
I am particularly grateful for some other posters to whom I regularly turn for information, and I just caught the latest “It’s Complicated” Episode 115 with Asha Rangappa who teaches national security law at Yale University and her podcast co-host Renato Mariotti, a practicing attorney who has a familiarity with crypto among other things. Asha has been an incredible source for me during these very strange times, and she reported that she has completed her contract obligation to ABC and may now appear on other network news channels as well. I look forward to hearing her wisdom wherever or whenever I am able.
Speaking of being able, a while back I mentioned a book that I had read about the author Evan Hunter a.k.a. Ed McBain in which details his travels through “medland” as he called it. I am identifying quite strongly with his story right now, and I am in the “more will be revealed” stage of various appointments. One day at a time.
So on to national security and the absolutely gobsmacking idiocy of having electronic chats about bombing other countries. I can fully understand why secrets should be imparted person-to-person whenever possible. I hope many of you caught some of Cory Booker’s fabulous schooling on history during his speech holding the Senate floor—Jersey in the House, so to speak. My contacts across the country and even abroad cannot believe that this is the actual government committing these “no harm, no foul” mistakes. Could it possibly be any more Dr. Strangelove?
And my final thought this morning as I have almost finished the story of Enid Greene being scammed by her husband Joe Waldholtz—RINSE AND REPEAT. The back dust cover of this hard copy book “Blind Trust” by Lee Benson (copyright November 1997) has a picture of the said Joe Waldholtz in a photo including Newt Gingrich (dated October 27, 1994). Newt is waving to the crowd at a Republican fund-raiser and that Gingrich “wave” definitely resembles the Nazi salute the current co-president likes to use!

There is no one on Substack more important than you are, Katharine. You temper the metal thrown at us as you interpret your own feelings about contemporaneous news. That perspective is just as critical as any other perspective. You have talked me off a bridge many times by explaining your perspective.
