I have just spent an hour walking around Fort Trumbull and contemplating the British attacking from the Thames tidal estuary known as a river. I also collected quite a few cans and bottles to return for 10 cents each, which makes me happy. But my newspaper had been delivered when I arrived home and as I glanced down I saw a headline which has already scared the bejeezus out of me. I realize that most of you get your news instantaneously online etc. but honestly I try to save some semblance of my old life by enjoying the actual paper after breakfast. So that’s what I have done this morning, and I will digest the news a bit later.
Meanwhile, I was very glad to be able to watch Heather Cox Richardson and Barack Obama in conversation at the Bushnell in Hartford, sponsored by The Connecticut Forum. In the old days, I would have been there in person for sure; but I knew it was past my bedtime so I thought I would miss it. Imagine how thrilling it is to find out that the whole event was recorded, so I had the best seat in the house. It is well worth an hour of your time to watch these two brilliant people have a chat.
I am also very pleased that I was able to have lunch with a friend I have known since the late 60’s, when she had a husband and five children and I was childless but married to a sailor. We met working with the Model Cities Program which has been all but forgotten now. Our circumstances have changed quite a bit since then, and the occasion of her coming here was related to a death in the family. But it was encouraging that we were both still ambulatory and taking nourishment. The daughter who accompanied her took some wonderful pictures of us together, then later sent me a shot of them visiting relatives and having four generations in one picture.
We cannot give up the fight to keep our democracy. I do not agree with Peter Thiel who is purported to have said that he thinks democracy and freedom are incompatible. What a load of crap!
RESIST ALWAYS
TTFN
Keep on moving K.
What Thiel meant is that democracy is incompatible with letting the ultra rich megalomaniacs rule.
Democracy is like plant that needs deep roots and nourishment from the soils of a mythical humanity.
