There seems to be too much going on nationally for me to even contemplate any soul-searching. However, our local paper will be publishing a special Breast Cancer Awareness issue next month and they requested survivor stories. So I spent a good deal of time reflecting on my cancer journey of more than 20 years ago. I wrote my story but was then having difficulty knowing how to submit it for consideration. I have until September 23 to do that, so perhaps more will be revealed. Meanwhile, I did enjoy the additional writing this week, so perhaps that is an indication that I should do more of it on a regular basis. We’ll see . . . (as I think I’ve shared before, my daughter once asked “Why does ‘we’ll see’ always mean No, Mummy?)
Anyway, I am doing some self-study of what to make of the countdown to Election Day. I know that these are very serious and dangerous times, and I know that none of it should be taken lightly. But honestly isn’t laughter the best medicine sometimes? And on that note, I have to share what I found very uplifting. First a bit of background. I love to dance, and I in particular like reggae. Indeed I went to Sunsplash a number of times in Jamaica. And while I haven’t followed them religiously, I do like the subtle wit behind the Simpsons. So when I found these combined with politics, how could I resist.
What I am talking about is The Kiffness, or rather David Scott, a musician from South Africa. (Another aside, my Mum’s Mum left England and settled in South Africa which I think I have also shared before.) Anyway, David is known for electronic music and parody, and he had already done some music involving cats. So who else to provide the absolutely best take on the current situation in Springfield, Ohio (which, by the way is not the actual town where the cartoon Simpsons live according to Wikipedia). I heard the song first on my phone seeing David composing the music in his studio with the debate segment playing above him. Then today I find The Kiffness (actually the name of the whole band but it has become attached to David alone) performing in Munich, Germany, as part of their European tour. The band is on stage with an incredible video playing behind them, which includes what looks like Simpsons in the montage, and David singing his latest, “They’re Eating the Cats.”
If I were so inclined, I’m sure I could insert a link here, but honestly I am of the age who learned to type on a manual typewriter, and getting dragged into the 21st century is not one of my favorite things. I know that if enough of you are interested you’ll find the information for yourselves. So, TTFN.
Thank you, Katharine. Just the nudge I needed to take control of my anger and start posting again. Coming soon to a Substack near you.
